circulation
Submitted by omjn on Sun, 2006-09-10 03:22. circulationCirculation is the repetition of motion along specified routes of transit; withon a medium. Circulation is not circulation without such repetition - that is, the transit, when repeated, becomes circulation. It is a transit loop. It is a history of couplings between a subject and environment. Broadly, circulation is those processes responsible for the circulation of energy, matter and meaning. IN particular, the attention here is on the systemic nature of these processes, and the circuits that arise from the histories of their transits, transitions and transformations.
circulation quotes
Submitted by omjn on Wed, 2006-09-13 23:48. circulationin DeLanda we find a hint that circulation of raw materials is a primary force in the shaping of modern urban geographies. For instance, "in the 1800s the intense circulation of coal energy gave rise to a far greater number of new (mining and factory) towns, most of which grew spontaneously, not to say chaotically" (and quoting Hohenberg and Lees) "by a kind of regional implosion, whereby a rural milieu crystallized into a densely urban one". (75) Furthering his genral thesis of material evolution, he turns later to "the "sonic matter" of a given language". He claims such matter,

Submitted by omjn on Wed, 2007-02-14 07:11. circulationIn the interests of open networks of circulation, I certainly prefer purchasing music without Digital Rights Management. The reasons for this are multiple and I hope to elucidate these over time by adding to this post. Nonetheless, below are three digital music retailers which provide DRM free music to consumers. I am an emusic subscriber, and if you end up signing up, let me know, as I will refer you and get some free music!

circulating the loop network
Submitted by omjn on Wed, 2007-02-14 03:50. circulationEssentially a place for discussing the rationale, design imperatives and function of setting up a podcast for making available audio documentation of the composition experiments of this project. The podcast can then be attached to the project or provided as an external playlist, whichever is easier to manage.
This stems for an earlier question and a problem I have been considering for some time. When dealing with multi-channel soundscape systems, and indeed multi-phonic acoustic experiences, how does one mediate those experiences and experiments within a broader circulation network so as to provide a modicum of currency to the work, and of course, receive feedback?

Submitted by omjn on Fri, 2007-02-23 16:26. circulationI think the theorists responsible have made it quite clear that memes are not genetic, but then those pesky scientists come along and mess it all up again. Here is a case of the genetic transfer of memes that puts an interesting spin not just on the storage of cultural data but on its transmission and circulation. You can read in more detail at the link, but in short The researchers used artificial DNA sequences to encode portions of the text of the children's song It's a Small World, added the sequences to bacteria DNA, allowed the bacteria to multiply, then extracted the message part of a DNA strand and retrieved the encoded information. .
more methods of circulation
Submitted by omjn on Sat, 2007-02-24 04:41. circulationTwo more links to websites concerned with the distribution of acoustic culture. Odeo, which by the way has recently been put up for sale (I suspect to cash in on the web 2.0/social networking internet bubble/boom/craze we seem to be in), seems ostensibly to be a podcast and free mp3 distribution hub. It's not new, but my site is not about news, so that's ok. Spotback is more of a news site, so it is concerned with the circulation of memes, and incorporates user voting of stories and/or popularity ranking features. It has recently added a music section, and from the looks of it is a little pop oriented for my taste, but that makes in no less worthy of discussion.
